Let Your Voice Be Heard: The Philippine Issues Writing Project

If you are Filipino blogger, there’s no better time and venue to express support for the country than here and now. You, who have been given the gift of words, the freedom of expression and the power to effect change — you can do something. If you can write exactly how you feel about the many issues and problems plaguing our country today, I urge you to join. It wouldn’t take too much of your time, really. An article or two wouldn’t be so hard to write specially if you feel strongly about it and you know that it is relevant. If there’s ever a burning topic in your mind that you’ve always wanted to write about concerning politics, the philippine society, the environment, technology and other highly talked about issues, now is the time to share it to all Filpinos and to the world. And you know what, It doesn’t even have to be a celebrated or publicized issue at all because sometimes, those not discussed publicly are those that actually matter. It’s high time that we get these issues out in the open for everyone to see and realize. Not a political blogger? Not an issue. Anyone who wants to write, even non-bloggers can join. If you can write an email, you can join. You decide your topic, the number of words, and the style to use — eloquence is not a requirement. Don’t just be another part of history, be a significant part of it. Let your vote be counted, let your opinions be heard. After all, that’s what democracy is truly about. So much has been said about our country, I know, probably even too much. But that doesn’t mean, we’ve heard all the “good” ones. For all you know, what you want to write and will write about would make a difference, a dent in the minds of Filipinos everywhere that will bring about much-awaited and much-longed-for change.
Join us and make history! Not sold yet? Well, if making history isn’t enough for you, there are other perks and prizes waiting for you as well…

Prizes will be P10,000 worth of books, cash prizes, and t-shirts among others. The list gets updated regularly so that’s just for starters. Many people are generously giving their share of prizes in support of this project.

Update, May 4: Prizes

  • Filipino Voices Stickers for everyone who participates
  • Books on Philippines and/or politics (to be raffled off)
  • A Flickr Pro Account (to be raffled off)
  • (3) Free One Year Blog Hosting sponsored by Ederic
  • To join, visit the FilipinoVoices.com website or better yet, click here to get to the exact sign-up page. Remember, it only takes one person to blaze a trail but it takes a collective effort to create a significant impact. Be that person and be part of that collective! I’ll be waiting for your article, kabayan.

    Gardening is Therapeutic

My mother is such a sucker for plants. I remember when I was younger, so much younger than today (haha..), she would wake up very early in the morning never forgetting to water her dear plants. She would lovingly check each leaf for aphids (whitish plant insects) and remove each one carefully as if a brain surgeon reconnecting neurons and nerves..haha.. Oh, she loved her plants dearly. And how happy was she whenever she sees leaves looking all “green and shiny”. Every morning, that was her joy, her piece of heaven on earth, her communion with nature. It’s no wonder then that she has a “green thumb”. Whatever she plants, whatever the condition, I can always bet that it will grow. Now, I’m not a hopeless romantic when it comes to plants, although somehow I knew that deep inside me, I probably am like my mom — only that I wouldn’t admit it. I just can’t live in a place that doesn’t have greenery, if only a few pots of it. Incidentally, we live in a townhouse, so unfortunately for me, the small patch of earth that we have here can only provide living, breathing space to a few plants. And now that we are talking plants, let me introduce you to my favorite right now. Well, it’s not really a “plant” per se, but a vegetable I think (haha).. drum roll please… my “malunggay” — otherwise known as “moringa oleifera”. Today’s much-talked about, much-hyped vegetable is indeed a wonder. It is known in the English-speaking countries as ben oil tree, the horseradish tree, or the drumstick tree. I’m not certain about the specifics and I leave that to you to research on, but from what I know

it has vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, iron and calcium in even greater potency as compared to the so-called main source of these vitamins.

Now, that’s a lot of vitamins!

So, the other day, I did what I have always been planning to do. I planted my very own “malunggay”. And boy was I glad that I did it. I felt really good. Gardening is indeed therapeutic. One thing is certain, I will be doing it again. I guess I’ll be adding this to my cheap thrill list. :)

    How I Lost Weight

Weight loss and diet tips are all over the internet. Diet fads come and go. Sometimes they work, sometimes (oftentimes actually), they don’t. In this podcast, I share with you what made me lose my stubborn extra pounds and how I keep them off. A warning though, I’m not a doctor, dietitian, or an expert in any medical field. Follow at your own risk. This may or may not work for you. I am posting it as a tip to other people who may want to give it a try. As for me, it’s working fine.

    A Small Orange Webhosting

I’ve always considered myself a net junkie. I stay online for hours on end, read blogs, surf sites, listen to music, watch videos and more. If you come to think of it, this has been my virtual playground, so to speak. These days, few things are not possible with the internet. Actually, i can’t think of any but I’d rather play safe, hence the statement. Anyway, if you’ve been online for a long time now, chances are you already have a website — either through social media networking or blog sites hosted free by many providers. As a starter, while learning the workings of the internet, a free site will work magic for you. You wouldn’t have to worry about messing with codes, no bandwidth to limit yourself with (although not all free sites support high bandwidth anyway), sometimes no maximum storage as well. Ah, the beauty of free hosting! But somehow, the internet “kid” in you discovers that the internet offers you more than you expect and you rediscover yourself and the information superhighway and realize that somehow, you have outgrown your free account. It’s either, you’ve finally decided to professionalize your site’s overall feel because your mini online store has expanded and your free host can’t support your needs anymore or you’ve finally realized you wanted to have your own personal domain and upgrade your once free blog host in order to take advantage of the many benefits that only people with self-hosted blogs enjoy. Whatever your reason, a true-blue netizen knows that, eventually, you will need to face the fact that although there’s a cliche that “the best things in life are free”, it doesn’t apply with the internet. Because in the universe that is the worldwide web, investment equals service and quality.

For those of you who are ready to take your internet lifestyle to the next level, webhosting services are aplenty. You see them pop-up while surfing certain sites, return as search results while your “googling” or you get offers through your email. There sure a lot of webhosts out there and they sure promise a lot. It’s important, therefore that you get to try it out at least, risk-free to make sure that particular webhost will work for you. You also need to know that you’re account is in good hands. And should there be any problems, you’ll have the support you need and fast. You should also look for forums that will connect you with other subscribers to share information, compare notes or simply to post your issues when you need extra help.

A Small Orange Web Hosting might just be what you need. They offer a vast range of services from simple to advanced websites. A Small Orange can fit your current needs and eventually grow with you. They have plans starting at $2.50 per month and feature up to 500GB of non-oversold bandwidth. Now, that’s a steal. They have support forums as well as available customer support.

    Logo

They value word-of-mouth advertising by their clients that brings in new customers so they’ve created a system specially designed for this. It’s called ASOrefer to make referring new customers easy. An existing customer can create links, coupon codes, and image badges that you can put on your site. And in exchange for your referral, they will give you a credit equal to the monthly price of the plan your referred client ordered. Awesome, right? Even better, there is no limit on the number of referrals. The credit is only made after the client’s first payment and you are also only eligible for the referral bonus after your first payment is made. Worried the paln isn’t right for you? Worry not. A Small Orange Webhosting also offers you a 30 day guarantee. Yes, that’s a full 30 day money back guarantee on all plans. And if you ever wish to cancel after this time, they will fully refund any payment made within the last 30 days. So, if you’re considering opening yourself to the many possibilities of the internet, look around and give A Small Orange a try.

Say what? PR7? A Wonderful Glitch!

This must be my lucky day. Well, I guess not really that lucky but few people I suppose would come across something as surprising as this. You see, I have Google’s PR button installed on my browser courtesy of course of the Google Toolbar. It’s very helpful for surfing because I can immediately tell the site’s/page’s relevance, at least in Google’s point of view. I’m new to blogging and web site maintenance, so SEO and PR, although known to me, aren’t the kind of stuff I spend time poring over..at least, not these past few weeks. As we all know, high PR is like a webmaster’s/blogger’s nirvana. So, imagine my surprise when after loading my first blog At A Loss for Words: Writings Of A Blogger Wannabe, I happen to have noticed something weird. PR7? On my blog??? what the? :) (more…)

Reference to “A Tooth For A Tooth, An Eye for An Eye” Post

I have a new entry on my other blog “At A Loss For Words: Writings of A Blogger Wannabe” about recent events relating to developments in the RCBC robbery/massacre. Suspected perpetrators, at least 4 of them, I think, were reported to have been killed in a shootout in Tanauan, Batangas. Read more
