My mother is such a sucker for plants. I remember when I was younger, so much younger than today (haha..), she would wake up very early in the morning never forgetting to water her dear plants. She would lovingly check each leaf for aphids (whitish plant insects) and remove each one carefully as if a brain surgeon reconnecting neurons and nerves..haha.. Oh, she loved her plants dearly. And how happy was she whenever she sees leaves looking all "green and shiny". Every morning, that was her joy, her piece of heaven on earth, her communion with nature. It's no wonder then that she has a "green thumb". Whatever she plants, whatever the condition, I can always bet that it will grow. Now, I'm not a hopeless romantic when it comes to plants, although somehow I knew that deep inside me, I probably am like my mom -- only that I wouldn't admit it. I just can't live in a place that doesn't have greenery, if only a few pots of it. Incidentally, we live in a townhouse, so unfortunately for me, the small patch of earth that we have here can only provide living, breathing space to a few plants. And now that we are talking plants, let me introduce you to my favorite right now. Well, it's not really a "plant" per se, but a vegetable I think (haha).. drum roll please... my "malunggay" -- otherwise known as "moringa oleifera". Today's much-talked about, much-hyped vegetable is indeed a wonder. It is known in the English-speaking countries as ben oil tree, the horseradish tree, or the drumstick tree. I'm not certain about the specifics and I leave that to you to research on, but from what I know
it has vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, iron and calcium in even greater potency as compared to the so-called main source of these vitamins.
Now, that's a lot of vitamins!
So, the other day, I did what I have always been planning to do. I planted my very own "malunggay". And boy was I glad that I did it. I felt really good. Gardening is indeed therapeutic. One thing is certain, I will be doing it again. I guess I'll be adding this to my cheap thrill list. :)
I'm relatively to the PinayMommies.com community yet I can already say that this is one serious mom group.. :) It's a vibrant group of wives, moms, moms-to-be and friends that are all actively participating and sharing the joy of being part of a dynamic community built on the premise of "helping each other". Now, this is even strengthened and supported by another amazing project of Mommy Ruby that will rock your Technorati's, Entrecards and RSS feeds! Presidential elections is two years away. For us, commoners, that's a long time. But for politicians trying to get the highest seat in the land, two years is a short time. Now, let me see, if I were a candidate, and I'm not as popular as today' celebrities, what would I do to at least increase voters' awareness of my hidden agenda errr..political platform? Do I go house to house? Give out flyers? No. A smart political candidate know better of course. Television, even in the advent of the Internet, is undoubtedly, still the most-effective, most-patronized media in this country or elsewhere. But how do I pay for it if I'm not filthy rich, you may ask? Bingo! Sponsorship. It's not surprising then that a lot of expiring, err..aspiring candidates have resorted to TV ads these past few weeks. There's this ad by the beautiful Sen. Loren Legarda, capitalizing on her flawless skin; another ad by Sen. Manny Villar's expression of support and financial assistance to abused OFW's who want to go home; one ad of the VP Noli de Castro encouraging people to stop renting and start getting a house of their own since Pagibig rates are at its lowest.. and yes, an ad by the young Sen. Chiz Escudero (although unlikely to run for president come 2010 -- whoa! campaigning "extremely" early then) promoting a health supplement and relating it to "good governance" -- well, that's new. Those are the only ones I saw at least. But I'm betting my bottom peso that we can expect more in the future specially towards the end of this year, increasing in quantity as we near the much-awaited, much-publicized, much celebrated "fiesta" that is the national elections. TV ads can actually be a good thing, you know -- offers wide audience reach, provides easy name recall (specially with a jingle) and all. But it has to be mixed with a good political platform, good reputation , a passion to serve and of course the brain and the heart (that will hopefully save many if not all of us) for it to be very effective. Politics in the Philippines is a game that has been played by many an expert in this field. Sadly though, the unassuming and very trustful spectators that we all are, end up choosing the lesser evil among a pool of evils. Although it is true that our salvation doesn't rest entirely on these soon-to-be leaders, there's absolutely no denying that change, at least in this country can only be effected by those who have the "power" to influence if not create it. Now, I'm not saying that campaigning through TV is wrong. I find it rude though and inappropriate when broadcasted at a time like this when there are more pressing issues that should be taken cared of instead of furthering political ambitions. Can't they wait at least until some issues are resolved? It's annoying to see these ads when you know we're hanging by a thread to complete disaster. Somebody stop this.
Weight loss and diet tips are all over the internet. Diet fads come and go. Sometimes they work, sometimes (oftentimes actually), they don't. In this podcast, I share with you what made me lose my stubborn extra pounds and how I keep them off. A warning though, I'm not a doctor, dietitian, or an expert in any medical field. Follow at your own risk. This may or may not work for you. I am posting it as a tip to other people who may want to give it a try. As for me, it's working fine.
Many people wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
When I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
The flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
The joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Men themselves have wondered
what they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them,
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Now you understand
just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palms of my hands,
the need for my care.
Because I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's my mother and all your mothers
And my grandmothers and your grandmothers
And my great grandmothers and your greats
And my great greats
And yours
And all you women
And Me!
