Bonifacio Day 2008 at Calamba: Marked By Street Protests

Post Page Rank

Late afternoon today (December 1) at Crossing, Calamba City, Laguna, protesters paraded on the street and caused a slight congestion in traffic. Actually, considering how frustratingly narrow the streets in Calamba are, even three people walking leisurely on the main road would be enough to cause one hell of an inconvenience. That is not to say, however, that their demands should be ignored. They have legitimate sentiments that needs to be heard and they raise valid issues that need redressing.

See photos of the protests here.

A flyer was handed to me which stated all of their sentiments. Mostly were protests against pending/future demolitions as a direct effect of modernization (railroad projects, ports) in the CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) areas. These demolitions have resulted to displaced residents, lost jobs and livelihood. I doubt that they will ever be heard, specially now that the government is all too-focused on Cha-Cha. How unfortunate for us all.
