Are high iPhone bills keeping you up at night? Contemplating on parting with your iPhone to achieve peace of mind? Or maybe mulling over throwing your iPhone to the nearest garbage bin?

Don’t lose hope just yet. Your iPhone is a device meant to be controlled by you and not the other way around. If your bills are soaring higher than the majestic Burj Dubai, then maybe you are doing something wrong OR maybe you’re not doing anything at all (when you actually have to).

After the jump, tips on how to adjust / set default iPhone settings to make sure that nasty charge-o-meter doesn’t chase you like crazy. If you follow these to the dot, you might just end up sleeping like a baby — but don’t do that too often, of course you need to work to pay the bills.

How to avoid incurring unintended charges on your iPhone bill:

If you don’t have one yet, I highly recommend you install a wireless router at home to make full use of the iPhone’s Wi-Fi capability. This will limit your data plan use to occasions when a mobile network is the only option to hook up online.

Here are the things you need to check everyday before toting your iPhone to office or school.

Set parameters accordingly as suggested below:

Tp prevent your phone from accidentally opening services that require internet connection, it is best to enable Auto-Lock. To do this, go to Settings>General/Auto-Lock>set to 1 minute (or longer if you wish, the shorter the safer but more cumbersome if you use your iPhone a lot).

Settings>Notifications>slide/set to “OFF”

Settings>General>Network>Enable 3G>set to “OFF”

Settings>General>Netwok>Cellular Data Network>Cellular Data>APN> Either edit or completely delete the set APN (http://internet.globe.com.ph) –>> but of course memorize it first in case you’ll need to connect via EDGE/3G/HSDPA in the future.

Settings>General>Network>Data Roaming>slide to OFF

Settings>General>Network>VPN>Not configured

Settings>General>Network>Wi-Fi>slide to “OFF”

Settings>General>Restrictions> set to “OFF”

Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Accounts>if you have set-up email accounts already, you don’t need to remove your emails, just set it to “INACTIVE” for all emails (one by one).

Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Accounts>Fetch New Data>set to “OFF”.

After setting values as suggested, test if the iPhone you have effectively removed/set all “PUSH” settings to “OFF” by clicking apps that require internet connection such as “Weather”. If it prompts you with “Could not activate cellular data network” You are not subscribed to a cellular data service.” then that means you have completely disabled (temporarily) mobile browsing and continuous charging caused by apps.
